Day 2: From Brett
July 20th, 2008We packed up so quickly so we could get out before the lifeguards got there. We wanted to make sure they did not make us walk to the south end for out launch.
Easy launch through 3 to 4 foot waves. Very nice weather. About 12 miles into our trip we noticed 2 other kayakers. We straight lined it to them and it turned out to be Mike Bode and Patrick Martin. After a short conversation and photo session they decided to paddle back to Ventura harbor with us. We continued back to the harbor were our new friends offered us a cool refreshment. I hope to paddle with these two again in the future.
We lugged our gear to the parking lot and called for our ride. Bob Hudson picked us up and brought us to his in-laws for the night. We were more than pleased with the generosity shown to us. After washing our gear Bob even treated us to a nice meal at Sal’s.
Day 1: From Brett
July 19th, 2008Good First day. Easy knee high surf launch. My fully loaded boat was stuck to the sand so Sarah offered me a shove. As I cleared the surf I looked back and saw my wife walking out of the water soaking wet. I guess she pushed to hard and went in head first. She was a good sport and it only cost me a new outfit.
The weather was perfect with just enough overcast to keep the heat away. The water was smooth and soon enough we were at Capinteria SB trying to decide were to land.
The lifeguard directed us to the south end of the beach for a landing. We then found out that the hike and bike campground was at the north end so we had to haul out gear by hand. The campground was nice but they wouldn’t let us check in till 4 so we spent three hours sitting in front of the gate.
We met some nice people that directed us to the local brewery. We sat and told stories about Miah to everyone around. Many beers were clanked in his honor. If you are in the area make a stop at the island Brewery.
